Hozier @ Immanuel Presbyterian Church 10_17

His poetic and emotional lyrics lingered, then slowly dissipated in the fog of the cathedral sanctuary. Walking down the center aisle with his acoustic guitar sans mic, Hozier gave all in attendance a spiritual experience. Taking advantage of the intimate setting, he asked the people on the second level, “I want to try something… Can you hear me up there?” They roared back a unanimous affirmation and Hozier, as if beginning a sermon, started strumming a blues riff of Skip James. As he began to sing the lyrics of “Illinois Blues,” his divine and humbling voice cut through the hot thick atmosphere. Highlights of his incredible set were heard in “Cherry Wine” and “Work Song,” tracks off his self-titled debut album, but ultimately he made us know we should’ve worshiped him sooner as he finished his set with his powerful and inspired song “Take Me to Church.” Hozier will be back on February 6, 2015 at the Fonda Theatre.

The King Khan & BBQ Show @ The El Rey 10_7

THE KING KHAN & BBQ SHOW + ISAAC ROTHER & THE PHANTOMS @ THE EL REY THEATRE

Photos and words by Cortney Armitage
King Khan came back to LA, but this time with BBQ (Mark Sultan) to the El Rey Theatre. The stage was stripped bare and so were their exposed nipples. The King Khan & BBQ Show played crowd favorites as die hard worshippers of the dynamic duo were almost drowning out the musicians singing along. The band revived “Tea Bag Party” from its hiatus. This was apparently on hiatus because some people got carried away when they played it and ruined it for everybody! But not last night. BBQ never missed a beat as he stayed seated playing his snare, bass drum and tambourine with his feet while playing guitar. King Khan was, of course, a majestic masked lion pacing back and forth across the stage making sure everyone left with a smile on their face.

THE KING KHAN & BBQ SHOW + ISAAC ROTHER & THE PHANTOMS @ THE EL REY THEATRE

Isaac Rother & The Phantoms opened and their brand of voodoo, mixing punk and rock n’ roll, brought all the right weird fun and nostalgia that two afros, some platform shoes, a skull necklace and serious high kicks should.

Nick Waterhouse @ The Mayan 10_2

Extended coverage of my coverage for LA Record:

NICK WATERHOUSE @ THE MAYAN THEATRE

Nick Waterhouse‘s music creates an atmosphere that crosses generations. He kicked off his Holly Tour at the Mayan Theatre with a magic hat he found in Texas, a large cool band and with firm intentions of making people get up and swing. Waterhouse’s old school big band charm was in full effect as he belted out “Holly,” the title track off his latest album, to everyone, but especially, the dancers delight.
